Workforce
Recruitment in Changing Remote Labour Markets
Abstract
In my doctoral thesis I deal with workforce recruitment in changing
local and transnational labour market areas. I pose three research questions.
Firstly I ask how the employer hires workforce in local and trans-national
labour market areas? Secondly I am interested in what are the essential factors
in labour market selection and processes of the selection in the point of view
of the employer? Thirdly my question is how the action of the employer affects
and shapes processes of regionalisation (suom. seutuistuminen) and
trans-nationalization of labour markets. In my study I lean on the theory of
local labour markets areas and phenomenon of regionalisation of the labour
markets. My study deals with the North Carelian labour markets. North Carelian
labour markets can be described as remote rural labour markets with high
unemployment rate. There is only one functional urban region located around the
city of Joensuu. However the study has interest also in larger context as
similar labour markets can be found elsewhere in Finland and Europe. Data for
my study is gathered by interviews of employers and by observation of
interviews for jobs. I will also apply the Finnish Employment administrations
registers to depict this phenomenon.
In my presentation I examine the theoretical assumptions of the study. I
view theories of recruitment, function of the local labour market areas,
internal labour markets of the organizations and segmented labour markets. I
will also look carefully how the organizational structures of the employers
might affect function of the labour markets as a whole. Through these debates I
will make some hypothesis in relations to my research questions. I will also
consider some methodological questions.
