Travelling to Turku

Turku is easy to reach by air via Helsinki, Stockholm or Copenhagen. Turku airport is only 8 km from the city centre. If you fly to Helsinki, there is a regular ExpressBus connection to Turku from Helsinki-Vantaa airport. The journey takes 2.5 hours. Alternatively you may take a train from the Helsinki city centre railway station.

If you are travelling via Stockholm, you might prefer to take a ferry through the beautiful archipelago. The daily ferryboat connections are operated by Viking Line and Tallink Silja, and the duration of the voyage is about 12 hours.

Local transportation

From Turku airport to city centre
Local bus number 1, route: Airport - Market Place - Ferry Harbour, runs approximately every 20-30 minutes. When reading the timetable and travelling from the Airport select “Lentoasema-Kauppatori”. The first column in the timetable is Monday-Friday, second Saturday and third Sunday. The bus stops on the Market Place in front of the Sokos Hotel Hamburger Börs.
Bus tickets can be bought from the driver, single ticket 2.50 € (3.50 € between 23.00-04.00), valid for 2 hours.

From the main railway station or bus station to Market Place
Both the bus station and main railway station are within a walking distance from the city centre. If you wish to take a bus from the railway station, all local busses stopping across the street from the railway station go to the Market Place. From the main bus station, most buses stopping in front of the station (on the same side of the street) go to the Market Place.

Taxis are generally easy to get. There are several taxi stands in the city centre, one on the Market Square. For a 5 km trip you may expect the fare to be around 10 euros, 10 km 15 euros (e.g. distance: Airport – City centre 9 km). After 20.00 hours, there is a small additional charge.

Cycling through the archipelago

You may want to decide to cycle to Turku through one of the most beautiful archipelagos in the world. There are at least two alternative routes to choose from:

  1. Stockholm – Långnäs – Korppoo – Nauvo – Parainen – Turku
    1. This journey begins in Stockholm. Book a ticket with Viking Line from Stockholm to Långnäs.
    2. Take a ferry from Långnäs to Galtby, Korppoo with Ålandstrafiken ferry services. Choose ‘Southern line’ i.e. Långnäs-Överö-Sottunga-Husö-Kyrkogårdsö-Kökar-Galtby.

  2. Grisslehamm – Eckerö – Långnäs – Korppoo – Nauvo – Parainen – Turku
    1. This journey begins in Grisslehamn, which is located about 120 kilometres north of Stockholm (map). Book a ticket with Eckerölinjen to Eckerö.
