Invitation to the Conference

Dear friends and colleagues

It gives me great pleasure to invite all of you to attend the 3rd Nordic Meeting of Geographers in Turku, Finland, in June 2009.

This will be the first time the meeting has been held in Finland. The two previous meetings were successfully organised in Lund, Sweden, in 2005, and Bergen, Norway, in 2007. We are working hard to make sure that our fellow geographers will have a pleasant experience during their stay in the oldest town in Finland, which is known also by its Swedish name Åbo.

The theme of the meeting is "change". This topic is more timely than ever due to the exceptional pace of change that the contemporary world lives through (I’m sure every generation repeats this phrase, but nevertheless). Rapid change includes both the societies and the environment, and their complex interactions on different scales.

Science, too, is experiencing a transition. On one hand, traditional academic disciplines are giving way to applied inter-disciplinary networks. On the other hand, local matters are paralleled and often superseded by global themes. For geographers in both human and physical realm, this is an era of chance and challenge.

The Organising Committee has been working long hours to develop a wide-ranging scientific programme, and we are very grateful to those of you who have proposed scientific sessions or who have agreed to be session convenors. The conference programme is continuously evolving, and it will consist of plenary sessions with invited keynote speakers and a number of thematic parallel sessions on a wide range of topics. In addition to / instead of oral contribution, you are welcome to present a poster in a specified poster session. A preliminary outline of the meeting schedule can be found behind the adjacent link on the side panel.

At present, we are happy to list the following confirmed keynote speakers:
– Prof. Victor R. Baker (The University of Arizona, USA)
– Prof. Anne Buttimer (University College Dublin, Ireland)
– Prof. Klaus Dodds (Royal Holloway, University of London, UK)
– Prof. Gunnar Olsson (Uppsala University, Sweden)
– Prof. Sarah Whatmore (Linacre College, University of Oxford, UK)

This web site will be updated as the planning advances, so please bookmark it for further reference. You can also stay updated of the progress by joining the NGM09 email list through the link on the side panel.

The host organization, the Geographical Society of Finland, and the members of the Organising Committee, very much look forward to welcoming you all to Turku next June.

Jukka Käyhkö
Chair, Organising Committee
