Welcome to Turku!

The Turku University Medical School is delighted to host the 2005 Annual Conference of the Association of Medical Schools in Europe.

The AMSE conference has an exciting programme of a workshop dedicated to medical university administration and four academic sessions each with contributions by internationally recognized experts. With great pleasure we welcome your most valuable expertise and participation in the debates and constructive discussions during these sessions and in fertilizing the ideology of AMSE. Our meeting is also a forum for oral presentations and posters of reports related to medical university policy, medical education as well as biomedical and clinical science.

The city of Turku has a 775-year history. In addition to being the oldest town in Finland and boasting beautiful medieval monuments such as the Cathedral and Castle, our town is a centre of business and modern technology. Since 1640 Turku has been an academic town, currently home of three universities. The Turku University Faculty of Medicine houses the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing Science. The university campus and the conference venue, Pharmacity Building, are within a 15-minute walking distance from the town centre. The shopping area, all hotels and restaurants are conveniently accessible to the conference participants. Turku has excellent flight and ferry line connections, as well as frequent bus and train links with Helsinki.

Early September is a season when the weather in south-west Finland is fairly warm and the colourful archipelago provides the town with fresh sea winds, occasionally also showers of rain. The social programme of our conference takes you on a boat trip to one of the world’s most beautiful archipelagos and invites you to taste the unique delicacies of the islands’ cuisine.

We very much look forward to welcoming you to Turku in September 2005!
